As you might have guessed, Two Chefs is a Phuket restaurant run by, well, two chefs. Actually, there are three Two Chefs restaurants in Phuket. Confused?

Billy and Henrik are a pair of lovable Swedes who serve up all manner of international dishes, as well as a fine selection of local favourites. Fans of roast meat will find lots of decent cuts on the menu to choose from.

The food is really rather good at Two Chefs and there is an equally good wine list to complement it. The prices of the food are definitely worth raving about. For 295 baht you can net yourself pepper-grilled chicken breast with a creamy, brandy-flavoured pepper sauce, baked tomato, sautèed veg and potato gratin.

If that isn’t enough to get you salivating, be sure to try out the chocolate brownie with amaretto cream. It’s a great dessert and it’s only 145 baht.

The second restaurant is located on the first flood of the Kata Centre, while the third is in Karon, located centrally on the thoroughfare of Karon’s north centre.

A relative newcomer on the Phuket restaurant scene, this restaurant at Karon Beach is large and striking, with the option to dine al fresco or under cover. The design work at Mali Waterfront is pretty rad.

This eatery is popular and so booking is recommended, especially during high season.

The menu is focused on seafood, with some other Thai dishes thrown in for good measure. For more Western tastes, there is Italian food and the usual burgers, sandwiches and salads.

If you’re a fan of seafood, this is a great Phuket restaurant to dine at. Typical main dishes cost about 200 to 300 baht, so a meal here won’t break the bank.

There are about 40 labels on the wine list, with some of the cheaper option not quite up to scratch. Service is second to none at this Phuket restaurant. Highly recommended for a place to eat in Karon.

Open from 7 am until midnight daily, this Kata restaurant is one of the finest around, with gourmet Thai and Mediterranean dishes on offer. Mom Tri’s Boathouse has won numerous awards and is well respected in the expat community for its fine foods and wine selection.

Though you pay for the privilege, dining at this restaurant in Kata is a treat. Some of the most popular dishes include Phuket rock lobster, penne pasta, filet of sole and Kobe beef steak.

The Angus rack of Aussie lamb is also out of this world, and at 1,000 baht, you’d hope it would be.

Located next to the beach, this Kata restaurant is a class act that stands out from competition in the same area. Mom Tri’s Boathouse is a great place to sample gourmet food in Phuket. This is one case when the restaurant can actually live up to the hype, which is novel for an island that is blessed with so much PR.

A decent steakhouse in Phuket, located in Kata near the beach. Horn Grill serves up a variety of meaty dishes, all served with a range of sides and sauces. The meat speaks for itself and has a price tag to match. Sample the delights of an Angus tenderloin or a grilled sirloin steak.

As steakhouses in Phuket go, this Kata restaursant does the job, but it doesn’t come close to the excellence of somewhere like Rivet Grill up in North Phuket.

The restaurant opens at midday with a few interesting lunch items on the menu, such as swordfish and Cajun chicken. Horn Grill also serves pizzas and the obligatory Thai dishes to keep local visitors happy.

The restaurant itself is pretty stylish and stands up as one of the better places to eat in Kata. There is also a reasonable wine list.

Joe Kools’ is a Karon restaurant that takes the unusual route of marketing itself as the “world’s worst restaurant” with “lousy food and overpriced drinks”. There are a few Phuket restaurants about which you might say this, but thankfully Joe Kool’s is not one of them.

Open from 7:30 am until 1 am, Joe Kool’s in Karon serves large portions of American food, such as ribs, burger, sausages, steaks and various other greasy dishes.

For the size of the portions at this Karon restaurant, the food is well priced. The ambience is fun and laid back and Joe Kool’s comes recommended. Being open so late for a restaurant, the place can become fairly busy on weekends.

Joe Kool’s is also a fun nighttime hangout, with a range of cocktails and beers and other standard bar drinks. Most nights of the week there is live music to entertain the masses.

Harry’s is one of many Scandinavian pub and restaurants in Karon. Harry’s serves a variety of Western and Thai dishes. The specialties are, of course, Swedish. If you are Swede or you’re into Swedish food, this is as good a place to sample it in Phuket as any.

One of the plus points of Harry’s is that while you’re eating and drinking your Swedish food, you might get to catch a glimpse of local musician Colin Hill, an Aussie who has chosen to make Phuket his home. Colin is also one of the stars down at Karma lounge, so you know that wherever he chooses to play is somewhere worth visiting.

This restaurant in Karon is only open until about 10 pm, so use it as a place to start your night rather than end it. The Swedes are always a friendly bunch so this place is worth a shot.
