Kata Beach is a great beach spot, especially during low season when there aren’t so many people around. The nightlife scene in Kata has a few bright spots, one of the most popular being Ska Bar, located right at the south end of the beach. As the sun sets and the people come out to play, Ska Bar starts rolling out the tunes and the fire dancers get to work, putting on shows on the beachfront.
The music tends to move between hip hop, standard dance tunes and, of course, reggae. Ska Bar is kind of a reggae bar, complete with young Rasta wannabes serving the drinks. The bar is really small, so arrive early if you want to be guaranteed a seat. Beers go for about 80 baht, while cocktails are 120 to 150 baht each.
Ska Bar is a popular Kata nightspot among tourists in the area. The Rasta boys are usually a friendly bunch, although they can be rather glum sometimes.

Tapas and Wine is a wine bar in Phuket that offers, well, tapas and wine. There aren’t a whole lot of wine bars in Phuket, certainly not in Kata, but this one really suffers through its location. There are noisy bars nearby and motorbikes blazing back and forth all night. This would be one of the best bars in Kata if it had a little bit more character.
Tapas and Wine is a small Phuket wine bar spread over one room with one side opening out onto the road. The open-air approach would have been better next to the sea or somewhere quiet. If you can overlook the iffy location, the wine list is small, but reasonable, with a concise selection of bottles going for about 1,000 baht or so. Nothing on the menu really stands out, but you should be able to find a palatable tipple to suit your taste.
The tapas menu has a variety of dishes for 100 to 150 baht. The nachos, however, are decidedly average. Not a bad wine bar in Phuket, but it somehow lacks that real edge.

Zanzibar is located in one of the busiest areas in Kata. Kata nightclubs aren’t exactly renowned as being the most interesting places for nights out, but Zanzibar is all right and it does its job.
Zanzibar has a lounge, a disco bar, some pool tables and the obligatory large TVs for people to watch sports on. Zanzibar is predominantly aimed at tourists, so while it has a dance floor, there are better place to go clubbing in Phuket. If you’re in Kata, though, your clubbing choices are really limited.
Check out Zanzibar for cheap drinks and good times.
Karma Lounge is a real hub of live music in Phuket. There aren’t many bars in Karon with as infamous a history as Karma Lounge. We’ll spare you the details, but let’s just say that the place is well known. Don’t let that put you off, though, because the owner and his crew are some of the friendliest people you could ever wish to meet on a night out in Phuket. The place has its haters.
The live music ranges from rock and blues to jazz and soul. The musicians are a mix of expats and locals who all come together for the love of jamming. Karma Lounge comes highly recommended. There’s no attitude in the place and it stays open as late as it can.
As the night wears on, the owner usually blasts out some trance music for the benefit of the remaining punters. This is a great place to meet some of the cooler expats on the island.

O’Tools is an Irish pub located at Karon beach. As Irish pubs in Phuket go, this one is about standard. They have a cocktail menu with a range of drinks all under 200 baht and they serve three types of cider, which is a great thing for all Brits visiting Phuket.
In terms of cheap beer, expect to pay under 100 baht for a bottle of Singha, Chang or Tiger. They claim to have one of the best selections of draught and bottled beers of any pub or bar in Phuket. Who knows, they might be right.
They show sports on massive TVs and you can also order food throughout the day. Irish pubs in Phuket don’t exactly get us excited any more, but if you want some home comforts and to meet some friendly faces, this is a decent place for it.
There’s also an O’Tool’s at Kata Beach next to the Centara Kata Resort with more of the same.
Perhaps the best draw of the O’Tools pubs is the live music on Monday and Wednesday in Karon and on Tuesday in Kata. Those nights have been picking up steam for the past two years and remain a firm favourite with the island’s music fans.

One of the best jazz bars in Phuket, Ratri Jazztaurant in Kata is an awesome bar at the top of a hill, with great views over the area. Ratri Jazztaurant comes highly recommended with a great bar selection.
The atmosphere is suitably calm, with a jazz band setting the ambience while you sip cocktails or wine. Definitely check out Ratri Jazztaurant if you’re into wining and dining.
This Kata bar is frequented by a decent crowd of socialites, mostly made up of expats and their girlfriends or wives. You could easily spend an entire evening at Ratri Jazztaurant casually drinking and chatting with friends or a loved-one.
If you’re in Phuket and anywhere near Kata, Ratri Jazztaurant is certainly worth a visit. There aren’t many bar in Phuket like this. Many try, but most fail. Grab a drink, kick back and enjoy one of the best views of any bar in Phuket.
