You don’t get much more diverse than this: Krafty Kuts and MC Dynamite played at Club Lime in Patong on January 2. Krafty Kuts is well known in the UK for belting out some of the freshest breaks in the scene. Dynamite is one of the most prolific MCs in the world, having risen to fame as part of Roni Size’s Reprazent. He then teamed up with the Scratch Perverts and toured the world. Now he’s joined forces with Krafty Kuts.
This is certainly the type of night that Phuket’s nightlife scene needs to keep people interested. We can only hope that the guys at Lime and all the other clubs in Phuket can keep things rolling into 2009. There have been some great nights in Phuket over the past couple of years, including a diverse range of DJs. Everyone from Jo Mills to Montonn Jira has stepped through.
People still complain about Phuket nightlife, but having spent some time in Bali over New Year, we can safely say that our little island isn’t doing too bad.
If you’re find yourself in Phuket over the coming weeks, be sure to check out the Soundwave Sundays parties held at Laem Singh Beach. As you’ve probably guessed, the parties take place every Sunday and they’re just about the best beach parties in Phuket.
People usually spend most of the afternoon lazing around on the beach, soaking up the sun and drinking a few beers. Once the sun starts to go down the music starts getting louder and people eventually start dancing.
These parties are cool because the majority of tourists don’t know about them, so it’s usually a laidback mix of travelers and local folks. The actions goes off at the western end of the beach. The only trouble with these parties is that they’re on Sunday, which is a bummer for working people who have to be in an office the next morning, but such is the price to pay for living in paradise.
Hollywood opened its doors over the weekend. Much like all the Patong bars and clubs, Hollywood has loud music, cheap drinks and lots of pretty girls. This Patong bar is in the venue that used to be the Dragon go-go bar, which was a harmless enough establishment that seemed to be doing OK for itself.
Hollywood is an ambitious project, but if the opening was anything to go by then this Patong bar should be giving Seduction a run for its money. There were a bunch of sexy girls dancing away on opening night. The event was well attended by the island’s busy socialites, as well as a fair smattering of tourists.
Hollywood certainly isn’t going to set Patong nightlife on fire, but the rumor going around is that the club will stay open until 5 am most nights. If that stays true then we expect to end up at Hollywood in the near future.
Baba Dining Lounge held another successful party last night. Those guys at Baba really know how to throw a party. Baba is one of the more sophisticated bars in Phuket. It’s not even a bar really, more like a lounge, restaurant type of thing. At night, when they hold parties, they go all out, with bands and DJs and all sorts.
The crowd is a bit like the folks you see at Bed Supperclub in Bangkok. The Baba crew are always there doing their thing, so the parties can feel a little cliquey. The music was decent last night, with Bonnie Anderson providing live vocals. Unfortunately, she was joined by a bald guy who we can only describe as a bad version of the guy from the Audio Bullies.
Otherwise it was fun all round. The drinks were cheap enough, with cocktails and wine set at only 100 baht a piece. We each got three vouchers for three drinks and there was no cover charge at the door.
Be sure to check out Baba when they have a special event.
There are a couple of Phuket bars hosting some decent parties over the next couple of weeks.
Liquid Lounge, one of the hippest Phuket bars you could ever wish to go to, is having a Hed Kandi party tonight (July 25). Hed Kandi is basically soulful house party. Liquid Lounge at Surin Beach throws some decent parties every now and then. They’re offering 2-4-1 shots from midnight until 1 am.
Also tonight, Jon Bellagamba will be spinning at White Box, the restaurant that is sometimes a bar and club. It’s ladies’ night, so all the girls get two free drinks. If you’re planning on picking up a random girl at Bangla you can take her to White Box for free drinks. Only kidding. Expect some serious dancing tunes. Starts at 10 pm.
On Saturday July 26, Club Lime, the club that’s more like a lounge bar with a dancefloor, will have Steady Eddy spinning all sorts of funky and tribal house. Expect a busy one. Cover charge is 200 baht.
On August 2, Tapas and Wine is hosting an oyster party. We are big fans of oysters (and wine) so we are sure this party will be worth a look. There aren’t many Phuket bars that serve free oysters. It all kicks off at 8 pm and will no doubt be a riot. You can call Mona for more information about this one. Tel: 0848382685.
The Phuket bars seem to be coming good in terms of parties. Let’s hope it stays that way.
So there’s a new club opening at Patong Beach on Soi Bangla soon. We don’t know a whole lot about it yet, other than they appear to have a lot of money behind them. That billboard ad space is expensive. Anyway, the grand opening for this new Patong Beach club is August 2, which is next Saturday. There’s a bit of a buzz going round about the club, as always happens with new Phuket bars.
If you’re in Phuket and want to check out the new Hollywood bar, head over to Soi Bangla. We haven’t been out in Patong all that much recently. The surf party at Club Lime was pretty decent, although one of the DJs decided to play trance music. What the heck?
A new club in Patong is a welcome addition because the place has been getting kind of stale recently. Club Lime has been doing its thing for more than a year now, but there aren’t too many other places of note. Check out La Salsa if you fancy something different.
We’ll bring you more news about Hollywood when we hear it.
Tonight is the closing party of this year’s Kalim Surfing Contest. As with pretty much every major event in Phuket, the closing party will be a major occasion with most of the island’s busy socialites out in force, this time at Club Lime at Patong Beach.
Patong Beach isn’t usually the choice of location for Phuket’s closing parties, but Club Lime is a suitable nightclub for a decent party. If you can get yourself to Patong Beach tonight, the party starts about 10 and will be a riot. Entrance is free and all drinks are priced at 100 baht, or so we’re told.
Club Lime is pretty much the standard when it comes to clubbing at Patong Beach. The DJs are usually the best on the island, churning out breaks, techno, electro and house, but tonight’s special guests, Joe Cornelio and DJ Franck Cyber, we don’t know much about and don’t have high hopes for.
We’ll down at Patong Beach tonight so come and say hi if you’re in town.
DJ Gene Farris will be back in Phuket next Friday, July 25. We think this is a last-minute booking as it’s not confirmed on Gene’s website yet. According to his website, Gene will be in Bali on July 24. We expect this gig will be at Club Lime on the beach road, which is where he played in January. Whatever, this will be a great gig as Gene Farris is a class act.
Phuket nightlife has been a little dull in recent weeks. This is exactly what it needs to inject a bit of life into the scene. See you next week.
White Box is hosting another party this week. The restaurant that becomes a small nightclub after sundown will have four of the island’s top DJs will be spinning house, techno and electro from 10 pm until late tomorrow night. Aha. Sounds like a typical restaurant, right? Or not.
White Box is a restaurant by day that holds parties at night. That’s why we have it filed in our nightlife section and our restaurants section, Saturday July 5 will see DJ Q, DJ Jin, Dreadmongey and DJ Taz tearing it up. These are four of Phuket’s hottest DJs. They play serious club music without compromise, totally different to the same old tunes you hear in places such as Seduction and Banana at Patong Beach.
White Box is a wicked venue and their special events always attract a bubbly crowd of the island’s beautiful people. With Phuket in low season at the moment, parties such as this one at White Box are few and far between, so you have to make the most of these chances.
If you want more information about White Box Phuket you can log onto www.whiteboxrestaurant.com
There was another attack on a foreigner riding a motorbike in Patong last week. These attacks are happening more and more frequently. Patong nightlife is a whole lot of fun, but with these frequent attacks, the Patong scene is becoming an ugly place.
This latest attack happened on Nanai Road. Add this to one on the beach road and a handful of other attacks dotted around Patong and you have to wonder how safe it is to ride a motorcycle anywhere in Patong after dark.
On a personal level, we won’t ride a motorbike in Patong after midnight any more. It’s just not worth the risk. Patong nightlife is great and all, but it’s not so fantastic that it’s worth risking being mugged for.
While we aren’t sampling Patong nightlife as much as we used to, Phuket Town is still a safe place to ride around at night. There is almost never any trouble in Phuket Town after dark and we have never heard of attacks on foreigners riding motorcycles at night.
If you’re out enjoying the charms of Patong nightlife (and the Patong girls!), it might actually be worth enlisting the services of the tuk-tuk drivers rather than riding a motorcycle. The attacks are happening all over Patong and they are happening to foreigners, locals, expats and tourists.
