Watermark bar at Boat Lagoon Marina

Watermark seems to have done a good job as cementing its reputation as the place to party for expats in Phuket. Compared to other bars and clubs in Phuket, it can feel a bit like you’re hanging out in a Western bar, but for drinks and good times, Watermark does the job.

Located at the Boat Lagoon marina, Watermark attracts its fair share of the island’s movers and shakers. The ambience is cool, overlooking the marina and some very expensive boats, which most bars in Phuket can’t offer.

The cocktail menu is pretty good and the wine list is worth checking out. Happy hour, every Friday from 5 pm to 7 pm, is when Watermark is at its busiest. There’s usually a live band or some form of music playing in the background. One for the active socialites in Phuket.

Banana nightclub in Patong

May 14th, 2008  Posted by Phuket Vogue

Ad: Patong beach road. Tel: 076-340306.

If you want to go clubbing in Patong, chances are you’ll come across Banana disco at some point. It’s one of the most famous clubs in Phuket, but it’s really nothing out of the ordinary. The drinks are priced fairly for a Patong club and the place is a favorite among tourists and local Thai girls out to dance their socks off.

You can usually be assured of a good time at Banana if you’re suitably drunk and out with a large group of friends. The place attracts a few undesirable characters and beer louts, so be careful whose toes you stand on.

The music at Banana in Patong is standard Phuket party tunes, with heavy doses of hip hop and popular dance music. Located on the beach road, Banana is close to several other Patong clubs, so if you don’t like the place, simply leave and head on to the next club. There is usually a small cover charge that includes a couple of drinks.

Rebar at Indigo Pearl in Nai Yang

May 14th, 2008  Posted by Phuket Vogue

Ad: Indigo Pearl resort, Nai Yang Beach and National Park. Tel: 076-327 006, 076-327015. Web: www.indigo-pearl.com

Located at Indigo Pearl resort in Nai Yang, Rebar is a hip little jazz bar made all the more special because of the awesome design work that you can see through the whole of Indigo Pearl. Being at Indigo Pearl, the place is a bit far from pretty much everywhere in Phuket, but it’s worth the trip just to soak up the ambience.

The drinks menu is pretty vogue, with a range of cocktails and spirits, all priced as you’d expect in a Phuket bar at a luxury resort. Music comes in the form of chill-out tunes spun by a DJ and jazz numbers by a great band.

Rebar at Indigo Pearl used to feature an extrovert jazz singer from the US, but sadly she left. Rebar is a romantic bar in norther Phuket that doesn’t get too busy most nights, so it’s a great place to drink and chill and listen to good music.

White Box bar and restaurant near Patong

May 14th, 2008  Posted by Phuket Vogue

Ad: Coast Road, just before Kamala Hill. Tel: 076-600177. Web: www.whiteboxphuket.com
VV-VVV

White Box is a hip little restaurant and bar in Phuket, not far from Patong. As the name suggests, the place is predominantly white and, well, in the shape of a large box. In terms of design and ambience, the venue is a cut above all the bars, clubs and restaurants in Patong. The top floor also has a decent view over Patong Bay.

Drinks are pretty expensive and the place has something of an upmarket feel about it, but you get what you pay for and the nightspot element of White Box is by no means a slouch among Phuket bars and clubs. The music policy at night varies. At the moment, White Box seems to be going through a hip hop phase, although at other times there have been DJs spinning house and electro.

There is a decent-sized dance floor and ample seating if it all gets a bit too much. Definitely one of the trendier nightspots in Phuket and around Patong. Some people seem to think that White Box is only a restaurant. It isn’t, which is why its owners promote it also as a nightclub when it suits.

On the restaurant side of things, the food is quite expensive, but suitably decadent, with dishes such as lobster ravioli and tuna tartar on the menu. White Box is a cool place to hang out at.

Scruffy Murphy’s Irish pub in Patong

May 14th, 2008  Posted by Phuket Vogue

Ad: Soi Bangla, Patong. Web: www.scruffymurphysphuket.com

There are seemingly hundreds of bars and pubs in Patong, but Scruffy Murphy’s is better than most of them, if only because of the awesome band that plays there every night. Scruffy Murphy’s is an Irish bar in Patong that is busy pretty much every night. A large number of island residents frequent the pub, which is a surefire sign that it’s worth checking out.

The drinks aren’t all that cheap, but they serve draught beers, Guiness and even cans of cider. Scruffy Murphy’s is definitely among the more interesting pubs in Patong. The band, fronted by an energetic Filipino lady and a dude with a violin, plays various covers and even the occasional Jewish track. Expect to hear lots of U2 and perhaps the odd Tina Turner hit (that girl can really sing).

Scruffy Murphy’s is a great Patong bar for pre-club drinks. The place is open during the day, too, and serves decent pub food.

Ratri Jazztaurant in Kata

May 14th, 2008  Posted by Phuket Vogue

Ad: Kata Hill. Tel: 076-333538. Web: www.ratrijazztaurant.com

One of the best jazz bars in Phuket, Ratri Jazztaurant in Kata is an awesome bar at the top of a hill, with great views over the area. Ratri Jazztaurant comes highly recommended with a great bar selection.

The atmosphere is suitably calm, with a jazz band setting the ambience while you sip cocktails or wine. Definitely check out Ratri Jazztaurant if you’re into wining and dining.

This Kata bar is frequented by a decent crowd of socialites, mostly made up of expats and their girlfriends or wives. You could easily spend an entire evening at Ratri Jazztaurant casually drinking and chatting with friends or a loved-one.

If you’re in Phuket and anywhere near Kata, Ratri Jazztaurant is certainly worth a visit. There aren’t many bar in Phuket like this. Many try, but most fail. Grab a drink, kick back and enjoy one of the best views of any bar in Phuket.

Baba Dining Lounge at Cape Panwa

May 14th, 2008  Posted by Phuket Vogue

Ad: Sri Panwa, Cape Panwa. Tel: 076-371006. Web: www.sripanwa.com

Baba Dining Lounge is located in the magnificent Sri Panwa resort, so you can be assured that you’re in a for a refined evening at this bar on the southernmost tip of Phuket. Cape Panwa serves up great views from Baba Dining Lougne.

The bar is huge, with several floors to explore and wander around, or else enjoy the outdoor seating. The décor is fab, too. This Phuket bar is one of the hipper places to party in Phuket, so expect to pay a little over the odds for drinks.

When these guys throw a party, however, it’s always a heck of a lot of fun with a decent crowd of Phuket’s busy socialites. Music varies. Sometimes you’ll hear chill out, while at other times, a DJ might be bashing out house beats or there may be a live vocalist. Worth making the trip for, even if you aren’t actually staying at Cape Panwa.

James Garden beer garden in Phuket Town

May 14th, 2008  Posted by Phuket Vogue

Ad: Poonpol Rd Soi 1, Phuket Town.

After-hours clubs and bars in Phuket Town are rare, but James Garden is always there as an option if you want to drink in Phuket Town late at night. The place is massive and open-air, making it a cool bar in Phuket Town to relax with friends and drink until the early hours of the morning.

James Garden isn’t really a bar you go to if you want to dance, but as more of a beer garden than a bar, it has a real local feel to it and isn’t usually found by tourists looking to sample nightlife in Phuket Town.

Pick your poison from various brands of whiskey or towers of beer. If you’re in a large enough group, you won’t spend much more than a couple of hundred baht during a night at this bar. Beer gardens are definitely among the cooler places to go out in Phuket Town. James Garden also serves food.

KorTorMor nightclub in Phuket City

May 14th, 2008  Posted by Phuket Vogue

Ad: Chana Charoen Rd, near Nimit Circle. Tel: 076-232285.

Pretty much an institution when it comes to where to go out in Phuket Town, KorTorMor is a victim of its own success sometimes, becoming so busy on Fridays and Saturdays that you might not even be able to get into the club.

KorTorMor is a fun Phuket club, though, with some of the best local bands playing there every night. Grab a bottle of your favorite whiskey, set yourself up at a table and enjoy your night. There’s no cover charge and this nightclub sometimes host famous Thai indie bands.

If you want to party in Phuket City, KorTorMor should definitely be on your itinerary at some point. The club attracts everyone, including students, random locals, expats and tourists. The place is well known by everyone, so it’s easy enough to find. KorTorMor is definitely one of the better clubs in Phuket City.

T2 nightclub in Phuket City

May 14th, 2008  Posted by Phuket Vogue

Ad: Clock Town Circle, next to Metropole Hotel, Phuket City.

Lively little club in Phuket City that doesn’t offer much more than other clubs in the area, but if you’re in Phuket City and you’re staying near Surin Circle, T2 is worth a look. You’ll have to fight your way past a barrage of about 100 motorcycle-taxi drivers who will try and persuade you to ride with them to somewhere with “lady”, but if you can resist that urge, there is fun to be had in T2.

As with most of the bars and clubs in Phuket City, T2 is all about bands and DJs. Get down early, pick a table, buy yourself a bottle of whiskey, and drink and dance until you can’t stand.

The bands are usually pretty good, blasting out Thai indie music and the odd Western rock tune. The DJ plays a kind of techno-hip hop hybrid. It’s fun for what it is, but there are better clubs in Phuket City that aren’t all that far away. Music Matters is round the corner if it all gets a bit too much.
